Writing groups have gained recognition in doctoral/researcher education as an attempt to put an activity that has traditionally been solitary back into a collective space, with the aim of performing academic writing as part of a socially situated practice. As a pedagogical tool, they aim to openly address writing itself as part of doctoral education, rather than assuming it as a tacit given.

A new experiment in our Monday seminar sessions, this group is open to doctoral students in all years and will be a mixture of taught content on style, generic expectations of thesis writing and writing habits, combined with sessions for writing and peer feedback.

For the 3 sessions planned this term, I have roughly sketched out themes we can address, though we can change this as needs arise and experiment with different formats and how to continue the work online.

Best practice seems to recommend that some sort of food sharing takes place to mirror the sharing of writing and generosity of spirit that goes into constructively offering feedback on eachothers' texts, so I propose we test this one out too.
